Behaviors and Risks
Blair Elise Wright, MD, is a pediatric physician at Northwestern Medicine. She claims that while many of her patients use vape all day, others smoke with their classmates at school or on the bus.
“Of my pediatric patients who have told me that they vape, none of them have reported doing so in order to quit smoking cigarettes,” she says. “As pediatric care teams, we’re worried about nicotine dependence, which may lead to an increased risk of using other nicotine products, like cigarettes, in the future.”
While e-cigarettes are increasing in popularity, their effect on health remains unclear. Research suggests that vaping could affect adolescents’ health in these ways:
- E-cigarettes are a source of nicotine which is highly addictive and may harm the development of brains.
- Exposure to tobacco and nicotine can cause the misuse of nicotine and other substances.
- Adults and children have been poisoned by the e-cigarette liquid when it comes into contact with the eyes or the skin.
- The withdrawal from nicotine can adversely affect your mental well-being. It can cause you to feel insecure, ashamed, and less confident.
Other factors lead to the increased usage of electronic cigarettes, especially for young children. They include:
- Children may believe that smoking is safe.
- Vapes are available in appealing and kid-friendly flavors that appeal to kids.
- Vaping is simple to perform (and be concealed) in indoor areas such as bathrooms, bedrooms, and classrooms.
Interventions and Care
Health officials and healthcare teams are working together to tackle the issue of smoking cigarettes.
“We are providing resources and helping to educate each other on how to help families and teenagers get the resources that they need if they’re struggling with addiction and to have good, open communication even when they’re not,” Dr. Wright says.
Some suggestions to keep in mind that will help you avoid the use of vapes are:
- Do not smoke. Children and teens can get influenced by the behavior of the adults around them. It is possible to reduce the exposure to cigarettes.
- Be open. Discuss with young people the adverse effects of electronic cigarettes on them. Inform them that you are there to assist them when they require it.
- Get in touch with your child’s care team. Inform them from doctors about the dangers of tobacco products, such as vape pens and other vaping devices.
Speak to your young ones and all of the family members in your life about the dangers of smoking vape. Offer support before they attempt vaping or when they continue to vape could assist them in seeking counseling or treatment and help prevent the onset of health problems in the future.
